Lily Collins Dishes On Her New Look, Celebrities’ Trend-Setting Power

She might be known for her dramatic eyebrows among other genetic blessings, but actress Lily Collins chose to downplay her signature feature when she debuted a new shag hairstyle at the Stylemakers 2016 event last week, giving her normally good-girl image a little jolt. The 27-year-old noted with some surprise the attention that the slightest alterations in appearance can garner. “One person’s change can make an entire change in fashion, which is crazy to me. When someone comes out with a new look it really sets the trends,” she said.

While Collins’ (temporary) bangs came courtesy of Jen Atkin, it’s worth noting that she has also taken the shears to her hair by herself, most notably right before the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar party, when she lopped off her long locks into a tomboy crop, saying that night, “I just did it on a whim.”

If she had her druthers, Collins said she’d channel more of Zoe Kravitz’s style. “Maybe some long braids, things that have a sheer factor, that are also risqué, a bit more badass. I’m trying to insert a bit more of that in myself,” she said.

She recalled one moment at the 2013 Mexico City premiere of “The Mortal Instruments City of Bones” for which stylist Mariel Haenn put her in a sheer Michail Sykianakis dress with strategically placed appliques. “Basically I could roll my dress into a ball, that’s how small the material was, and every part of my body was meticulously covered by black material. I had to move in a very specific manner. It was a beautiful dress so I just had to figure it out.”

For Stylemakers, Collins also tried out a lesser-known label, the New Delhi-based Gauri & Nainika, designed by sisters Gauri and Nainika Karan, who founded their company in 2002. Since then, it’s appeared on a handful of Hollywood celebrities, including Gabrielle Union, Kate Walsh, Tori Kelly, Arielle Kebbel, Pamela Anderson, Bellamy Young, Carrie Underwood, Beth Behrs, Sia and Joey King, though Collins is arguably one of the highest-profile actresses to wear the label to date. If the attention her new bangs have garnered is any indication, it may mean more red-carpet placements to come for the sibling duo.
